First record of the invasive longhorn crazy ant, Paratrechina longicornis (Latreille, 1802) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) from Mt. Elgon, eastern Uganda

We report the first observation of the invasive longhorn crazy ant (Paratrechina longicornis) in the Mount Elgon region of eastern Uganda. About 43 000 ants were sampled in 256 locations throughout the Ugandan foot slopes of Mt. Elgon in the years 2014, 2015 and 2016. We found P. longicornis in five locations in and around the town of Budadiri, Sironko district. The visual species identification was confirmed by COI gene-based DNA barcoding. That this species was found in only a small area suggests that it has only been recently introduced. The impact that P. longicornis will have on the local agricultural system or the biodiversity within the Mount Elgon National Park remains unclear. The Mt. Elgon region is a unique key biodiversity area where baseline data can be collected now to quantify the effects of P. longicornis as it increases its distribution within the region.

Spectral Requirements for the Development of a New Hyperspectral Radiometer Integrated in Automated Networks - the Hypernets Sensor

Networking of automated instruments on unmanned platforms has proved to be the most effective way to provide validation data for earth observation optical missions. However, with most current networks, such as AERONET-OC [1] for water and RADCALNET for land [2], the validation data are multispectral and/or limited in viewing geometries, resulting in modelling associated uncertainties to cover all spectral bands of all sensors and to correspond to satellite viewing geometries. Therefore, the HYPERNETS Project is developing a new hyperspectral radiometer to be integrated in automated networks. The main goal of the project is to acquire hyperspectral measurements of water and land reflectance and validate every optical earth observation satellite remote-sensing sensor in the Visible-Near Infrared (VNIR) and Short-wave Infrared (SWIR) spectral range. The present study reports the spectral characteristics of current and future earth observation missions. These characteristics represent the main drivers for the design of the HYPERNETS sensor.

Old concepts in a new semantic perspective: introducing a geotemporal approach to conceptual definitions in geology

Geological units are the fundamental building blocks that help understand regional geological history and architecture. Classifying these correctly is therefore crucial, as is acknowledging how they relate to each other. This is where traditional definitions fall short, which is increasingly becoming evident with the ongoing effort of setting up advanced knowledge systems that rely on semantic grounding. In exploring the way forward for fundamental improvements, we use the foreland basin and related concepts to introduce a geotemporal conceptual approach of defining geological units with relative limits in time and space. This approach closes the semantic gap between definitions in thesauri and formal instantiation in ontologies.

Frontal sinuses and human evolution
-
The frontal sinuses are cavities inside the frontal bone located at the junction between the face and the cranial vault and close to the brain. Despite a long history of study, understanding of their origin and variation through evolution is limited. This work compares most hominin species’ holotypes and other key individuals with extant hominids. It provides a unique and valuable perspective of the variation in sinuses position, shape, and dimensions based on a simple and reproducible methodology. We also observed a covariation between the size and shape of the sinuses and the underlying frontal lobes in hominin species from at least the appearance of Homo erectus. Our results additionally undermine hypotheses stating that hominin frontal sinuses were directly affected by biomechanical constraints resulting from either chewing or adaptation to climate. Last, we demonstrate their substantial potential for discussions of the evolutionary relationships between hominin species. Variation in frontal sinus shape and dimensions has high potential for phylogenetic discussion when studying human evolution.

New material of the small raoellid artiodactyl Metkatius kashmiriensis Kumar and Sahni, 1985 (Mammalia) from the middle Eocene of the Kalakot area, Rajouri District, Jammu and Kashmir, India

New material of the small raoellid artiodactyl Metkatius kashmiriensis is reported from the middle Eocene of the Upper Subathu Formation in the Kalakot area, Jammu and Kashmir, northwest Himalaya, India. The fossil material consists of numerous mandibular and maxillary fragments and isolated teeth, mainly belonging to juvenile specimens. It documents the poorly known dental morphology of M. kashmiriensis and provides an overview of its intraspecific variation, allowing to redefine its diagnosis. M. kashmiriensis is characterized by a particularly small size compared with other raoellid species, and by bunodont molars with moderately marked transverse lophs. The M/1–2 are much longer than wide and display characters similar to those of Rajouria gunnelli, such as the presence of a small paraconid and a mesial mesiostylid. The P/4 bears distally a small hypoconid, which appears to be unique in Raoellidae. The description of the new material also allows to document the poorly known morphology of the deciduous teeth of raoellids. The DP2/ is reported for the first time, and the DP/4 of M. kashmiriensis shows a morphology different from that of Indohyus, with the absence of mesial basin anterior to the paraconid and the primoconid. Contrary to what has recently been proposed, these results confirm that M. kashmiriensis is a valid species and not a synonym of Indohyus indirae, and highlight the great morphological diversity present within the Raoellidae during the middle Eocene in the Indian subcontinent.

RÉSUMÉ Les observations pétrographiques en lames-minces et les analyses au microscope électronique à balayage complètent les observations macroscopiques et mésoscopiques faites sur des tessons appartenant à deux espaces d’occupation rubanée situés à Velroux (Grâce-Hollogne, Province de liège, Belgique). Quatre groupes et plusieurs sous-groupes de pâtes céramiques ont été identifiés et caractérisés. Les sources locales et régionales des matières premières utilisées par les potiers rubanés sont discutées et ouvrent des perspectives sur les utilisations des matières premières sur la grande aire rubanée. SUMMARY/ABSTRACT Petrographic observations in thin sections and scanning electron microscopic analyses complete the macroscopic and mesoscopic observations made on pottery sherds belonging to two occupation area belonging to the Linear Pottery culture and located at Velroux (Grâce-Hollogne, Province of Liege, Belgium). Four groups of ceramic pastes and some sub-groups were identified and characterized. Local and regional sources of raw materials used by the LBK potters are discussed and open perspectives on the uses of raw materials in the large Linear Pottery Culture area.
