Techreport Reference System-to-system interface between the EMSA CleanSeaNet service and OSERIT: the potential synergies between remote sensing and modelling in case of marine pollution
The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS) develop and operate together a system-to-system interface between the EMSA’s CleanSeaNet service and OSERIT, the Belgian Oil Spill Evaluation and Response Integrated Tool. This interface is meant to provide CleanSeaNet users with a support tool for early and automatic oil drift and fate simulation results of any satellite-detected oil spills reported by the CleanSeaNet service in the North Sea and the English Channel. In view of the automatic forecast and backtrack simulations results, CleanSeaNet users have the possibility to further refine this early risk assessment either by activating their own national decision support system or by requesting new, advanced simulations through the CleanSeaNet GIS viewer. This interface is currently passing the final acceptance tests. However, the system has already been used by RBINS for the oil pollution event subsequent to the Flinterstar sinking at 8km off the port of Zeebruges on the 6th of October 2015. This event perfectly illustrates the potential synergies of remote sensing and modelling in case of marine pollution and their integration in risk assessments that must be performed for any significant pollution of the marine system.

Article Reference Pioneer farming in southeast Europe during the early sixth millennium BC: Climate-related adaptations in the exploitation of plants and animals
The Old World farming system arose in the semi-arid Mediterranean environments of southwest Asia. Pioneer farmers settling the interior of the Balkans by the early sixth millennium BC were among the first to introduce southwest Asian-style cultivation and herding into areas with increasingly continental temperate conditions. Previous research has shown that the bioarchaeological assemblages from early farming sites in southeast Europe vary in their proportions of plant and animal taxa, but the relationship between taxonomic variation and climate has remained poorly understood. To uncover associations between multiple species and environmental factors simultaneously, we explored a dataset including altitude, five bioclimatic and 30 bioarchaeological variables (plant and animal taxa) for 57 of the earliest farming sites in southeast Europe using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). An extension of correspondence analysis, CCA is widely used in applied ecology to answer similar questions of species-environment relationships, but has not been previously applied in prehistoric archaeology to explore taxonomic and climatic variables in conjunction. The analyses reveal that the changes in plant and animal exploitation which occurred with the northward dispersal of farmers, crops and livestock correlate with south-north climate gradients, and emphasize the importance of adaptations in the animal domain for the initial establishment of farming beyond the Mediterranean areas.

Article Reference Assessing the radiocarbon freshwater reservoir effect for a Northwest-European river system (the Schelde basin, Belgium)
The freshwater reservoir effect (FRE) for the Schelde basin (Belgium) is assessed for the Roman, Medieval and early Post-medieval periods by comparing historical and archaeological dates from individual archaeological deposits with radiocarbon dates on the remains of freshwater fish and terrestrial mammals from those same deposits. This is the first time such an assessment has been attempted for the Schelde basin. The FRE offsets prove to be substantial for the historical periods considered. They also differ markedly between fish species and between size classes of a single species. These observations have implications for the evaluation of radiocarbon dates obtained on archaeological remains of humans (and animals) with a substantial amount of freshwater fish into their diet. The data obtained in this study suggest that it will not be easy to correct for any FRE.

En Mauritanie occidentale, le site de Nouadhfat, au nord-est de Nouakchott, est essentiel, tant pour la connaissance des paléoenvironnements holocènes que pour celle du Néolithique. Le site se trouve à proximité d’un important paléoréseau hydrographique et sur le rivage d’un vaste paléolac marqué par des diatomites, des gastéropodes d’eau douce et des pistes animales imprimées dans la boue. L’habitat fut occupé par des chasseurs-cueilleurs, des pêcheurs (présence de harpons) et des éleveurs, qui profitèrent d’un milieu évoluant progressivement vers moins d’humidité : une première fois au Néolithique moyen (autour de 6400 cal. BP), puis plus récemment (3900 – 3300 cal. BP), après une crise aride très marquée. Nouadhfat, qui est le site le mieux daté de la région, s’inscrit dans un ensemble d’une grande richesse sur au moins quatre millénaires. La caractéristique principale de ce groupe est sans doute l’existence de nombreuses cultures, qui se sont succédé ou ont cohabité, avant que la limite septentrionale du Sahel ne se décale nettement vers le sud.
