Les elasmobranches des Sables de Kerniel (Rupélien), à Gellik, Nord Est de la Belgique

Geological Survey of Belgium, vol. n°45 - 1999. Memoirs of the Geological Survey of Belgium.

The discovery of some fossiliferous seabeds from the Sands of Kerniel (Rupelian of the east part of Belgium), in the construction pit for widening of the Albert canal, near Maastricht, permits to recognize a new elasmobranch fauna. Twenty-one species have been recognized. Thirteen of them are new for this sandy facies of the Rupelian of Belgium: Squalus al.s.aticus (ANDREAE, 1892); Pristiophorus rupeliensis STEURBAUT & HERMAN, l978; Isurus flandricus. (LERICHE, 1910); Lethenia vandenbroecki (WINKLER, 1880); Carcharocles angustidens. (AGASSIZ, 1843); Alopias exigua (PROBST, 1879); Cetorhinus parvus LERICHE, 1908; Megascyliorhinus sp.; Scyliorhinus. sp.; Carcharhinus elongatus (LERICHE, 1910); Dasyatis sp.; Rhinoptera sp. and Chimaera sp. The generic name of two species classically attributed to the genera Lamna CUVIER, 1817 and Isurolamna CAPPETTA, 1976 is modified: Lamna rupeliensis (LE HON, 1871) is now attributed to the new genus Rhizoquadrangulus. and Isurolamna vandenbroecki (WINKLER, 1880) is attributed to the new genus Lethenia. The biostratigraphical study of this elasmobranch fauna from the Rupelian of Belgium indicates the same diversity for the sandy and the clayish facies of this stage.
